Shoulder turn is critical to a pure swing! If you have been following my blog, you should be noticing a pattern over the last few posts! Ribs Ribs Ribs and not the kind you eat! As I have mentioned before, ribs can get tight. The muscles between your ribs are called intercostals and they tend to get tight over time, especially if you sit a lot or spend a lot of time hitting golf balls. How do you get them to loosen up? The best way is by moving your body and breathing. Yoga is a great way to improve rib mobility and I strongly encourage my golfers to do yoga as much as possible. Here is a great Yoga video to try for improving rib mobility.
However, this is not the exercise I was going to show you today! I was planning on sharing an exercise called “open books.” Open Books is a great way to gently stretch your rib intercostals, pec muscles and hips without stressing your body too much. Start out on your side in the “fetal position” with your arms outstretched in front of your body with your palms together. Slowly breath in and reach your top hand around your body and try to touch the ground with the back of your hand. Remember to try to keep your knees together and your thigh on the ground. Watch this video to get a better idea of how the exercise works. Also, you will want to breath in as you reach and out as you bring your hand back to the starting position. Perform 10-20 reps per side.
